ARREST MADE AFTER BURGLARY IN PROGRESS CALL

Chatham, NY – Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that a Chatham man has been arrested and charged for breaking into a pub in the Village of Chatham after his office received a burglary in progress call on December 12, 2016.

Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched at approximately 8:07 pm to the People’s Pub on Main Street in the Village of Chatham after one of the proprietors reported to police that he believed someone had broken into his business and was in fact still in the pub. The pub owner received a notice on his cell phone from his security service that included video and showed a male subject still inside of the pub. The business was closed at the time and the owner was not at the establishment. Upon arrival at the scene Deputy Sheriff Travis VanAlstyne and his K9 partner Kira conducted a search of the premise and found that the subject had fled the scene prior to the arrival of police units. The pub owner reported that a safe was broken into and approximately $1,500.00 was stolen. It was also reported that while in the establishment the video showed the suspect eating food from the kitchen.

The Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigative branch responded to the scene and continued the investigation. Investigators were able to develop a possible suspect from the video footage and subsequently interviewed the individual. During the course of the interview the suspect made admissions as to his involvement in the burglary.

On December 15th, 2016 at approximately 2:20pm Investigators Patrick Logue and Reagan Anderson arrested 30-year-old Eric C. Boughton of Austerlitz Street Chatham, New York and charged him with Burglary in the Third Degree a class D Felony and also with Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree a class E Felony. Boughton was arraigned before the Honorable Judge Daniel Brackett in the Village of Chatham Court and remanded to the Columbia County Jail on $20,000 cash bail or $40,000 bail bond. He is to return to the Village Court on January 3rd, 2017.

Sheriff Bartlett stated “The deputies and investigators did an outstanding job in quickly developing and identifying a suspect in this case as well as conducting a thorough investigation that ultimately lead to the arrest of Mr. Boughton.” The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Columbia County District Attorney Paul Czajka’s Office.
