COLUMBIA SHERIFF’S OFFICE INVESTIGATES HOME INVASION IN GREENPORT

Greenport, NY — Sheriff David P. Bartlett reports that at approximately 11:50 pm on November 7, 2016, Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched by Columbia County 911 for a report of a possible home invasion that just occurred on Middle Road in the Town of Greenport.

After arriving on the scene, Deputies found that two victims had been in bed at their residence sleeping when three male subjects entered the residence, turned off the power, and assaulted the home owners. The suspects then fled the residence on foot after the assault.

Upon conducting a canvass of the neighborhood and searching the immediate area, Deputies along with members of the NYSP located the three subjects hiding nearby. The three suspects were subsequently interviewed by Sheriff’s Office Investigators, where they all made admissions as to their involvement in the home invasion.

Sheriff’s Office Deputies and Investigators arrested 23 year old Derek Peeters of Main Street Philmont, 21 year old John Day of State Route 9G Greenport, and an 18-year-old male from Chatham. The arrests occurred at approximately 8:00am this morning and each were charged with (1) count of Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C Violent Felony, and all three were also charged with (2) counts of Assault in the Third Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.

One male victim in this incident was transported by the Greenport Rescue Squad to Columbia Memorial Hospital and treated for a laceration to the arm where he was later released. The second female victim was also injured and was treated by Greenport Rescue Squad on the scene, but declined transport to the hospital.

All three defendants were arraigned in Greenport Town Court before the Honorable Judge Frances Abitable and remanded to the Columbia County Jail with no bail. They are to return to Greenport Town Court at a later date.

Investigating for the Sheriff’s Office are Senior Investigator Kevin Skype, Investigator Patrick Logue, Investigator Reagan Anderson, Sergeant Andrew Broockmann, and Deputy Michael Meier.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted in the investigation by the NYSP and the Columbia County District Attorney’s Office.
