Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a Yorktown man on Driving While Intoxicated and drug charges.

On May 8, 2016 at 1:31 a.m., while on patrol, Deputy Sheriff Jonathan Irwin observed a vehicle being operated in traffic on Route 6 in Mahopac with sparks emanating from a damaged front wheel. The deputy stopped the vehicle and determined that the driver, identified as Peter Sjulander, 43, of 3595 Strang Boulevard, Yorktown was intoxicated. The deputy arrested Mr. Sjulander and charged him with Driving While Intoxicated, a misdemeanor, after the man failed a series of standardized field sobriety tests. During the arrest, the deputy determined that Mr. Sjulander was in possession of quantities of cocaine and oxycodone. The deputy additionally charged the man with two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Seventh Degree, a misdemeanor. The defendant was processed at the Putnam County Correctional Facility and held pending arraignment.

If found guilty of the misdemeanor charges, the defendant could face up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.00 for each charge.
