Red Hook man arrested for felony DWI following 911 erratic vehicle broadcast

Milan, New York – On February 29, 2016, New York State Police from the Rhinebeck barracks arrested Thomas H. McCarthy, 31 years old, of Red Hook, New York, for Driving While Intoxicated, a Class E Felony, Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree, and Resisting Arrest, both Class A Misdemeanors.

At approximately 1:32 a.m., Troopers were notified by Dutchess County 911 that an erratically operated motor vehicle that was last seen traveling on Route 308.  Troopers located the vehicle on Route 199 traveling at a high rate of speed. They followed the suspect vehicle onto the Taconic State Parkway and active their emergency lights and sirens, directing the driver to stop the 2003 Chevy Pick-up truck.

The driver, later identified as McCarthy, failed to stop for the police vehicle and subsequently exited the roadway and became disabled in median.  While patrols attempted to place McCarthy in custody, he actively resisted arrest.

McCarthy was charged with Felony DWI when a criminal history revealed a previous DWI related conviction from April of 2015.   The defendant was arraigned before the Town of Milan Justice Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $5,000 cash bail or $10,000 bond.

The State Police were assisted by the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.
