New Lebanon, New York – On June 30, 2015, New York State Police were dispatched to investigate a collision that occurred at the New Lebanon Valley Speedway annual “Eve of Destruction” racing event.

At approximately 10:00 p.m., a Winnebago motorhome, driven by Shawn J. Rivers, age 43, of Castleton, New York, was racing on the speedway track. A second vehicle, operated by Frank J. Sorrento, 34 of Rensselaer, New York, attempted to disable the motorhome as part of the rules of the race. Sorrento struck the motorhome, causing it to rollover and collapse.

Rivers was extricated from the demolished motorhome by Lebanon Valley Track EMS and racetrack officials. He was transported to Albany Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation is continuing.
