PRESCRIPTION DRUG DROP-OFF AT PICNICS

The Office for the Aging’s 2015 Senior Picnic Program is now underway.  Residents age 60 and over are invited to come out and socialize with their friends and neighbors at the event designated for their hometown, enjoy a nutritious meal, and learn more about the programs and services offered by the Office for the Aging.  Other County departments, as well as several non-profit organizations of interest to seniors, will also be on hand.  All picnics begin at 12 noon.

Again this year, attendees are invited to bring their unused and/or expired medications to the senior picnic to be disposed of in convenient drop boxes.  In addition to prescription medications, residents can also dispose of medicated ointments, inhalers and over the counter medications.  Medications should be brought in their original packaging inside sealable plastic bags.  Hazardous materials and needles of any kind will not be accepted.  Special thanks to Dutchess County Stop DWI, the Traffic Safety Board and the Dutchess County Sherriff’s Office for arranging for this special service.

For those unable to attend a senior picnic, medication disposal sites, open 24 hours a day, are available at the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office, 150 N. Hamilton Street in Poughkeepsie; East Fishkill Police Department, 2468 Route 52, Hopewell Junction; Hyde Park Police Department, 3 Cardinal Rd.; City of Beacon Police Department, 1 Municipal Plaza; Town of Poughkeepsie Police Department, 19 Tucker Drive; Wappingers Falls Police Department, 2628 South Avenue; and NYS Police, Troop K Headquarters, 2541 Route 44 in Salt Point.  A disposal site at the Red Hook Police Department, 7467 South Broadway, is available daily between 8 AM and 12 midnight.

Proper disposal of unused medications is an important step to making sure these substances do not get into groundwater by throwing them in the trash or flushing them down the toilet.  It also keeps them out of hands of those who might abuse them as more than 70% of abused prescription medications are obtained from friends or relatives.

The Senior Picnic Program is made possible through private/public partnerships with support from many local municipalities and businesses.  Special thanks to our platinum level sponsors for 2015: Wingate Healthcare, Hudson Cadillac Buick GMC, The Pines at Poughkeepsie, Prime Health Choice, Zounds Hearing, Elant Choice, the Dutchess County Department of Social Services – Protective Services for Adults and Hamaspik Choice.  Sponsorships for a limited number of picnics are still available.  Volunteers of all ages are needed at some picnics to help with set-up, bringing meals to the handicapped attendees and clean up.  Call the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555 for more information.

Picnics are open only to senior citizen residents and their guests of the village/town(s) specified for each event.    Space is limited; therefore reservations and proof of residency are required.    Call 486-2555 to make a reservation.  There is a $4 charge for anyone 59 or younger or non-resident guests.  For a complete listing of the Dutchess County Senior Picnics, visit:

Healthy Heart for Dad is Greatest Gift

Quiz: What’s a great gift for Dad that comes neatly packaged, has a cool beat and looks great in red?

Answer: a healthy heart!

You can help Dad have a healthy heart by joining him in living a heart healthy lifestyle. Healthy lifestyles can help prevent heart disease and stroke, and help Dad and the whole family live a longer, stronger, healthier life.

Heart disease is the number one killer of men. According to the American Heart Association, a man’s risk for heart disease begins to rise greatly starting at 45 years of age. Unfortunately, half of the men who die suddenly of coronary heart disease—the most common kind of heart disease—have no previous symptoms. Even men who have no symptoms may be at risk.

The good news for Dad is the majority of heart disease incidence can be prevented by simple lifestyle changes like eating a healthier diet, quitting smoking, reducing sodium to 1,500 mg/daily, and exercising 30 minutes most days of the week.

If you’re giving Dad a Father’s Day BBQ, choose healthier items or make his favorite dishes in a healthier way. The American Heart Association recommends lean meats or fish for grilling, adding vegetables to dishes, using whole grain breads and side dishes, and enjoying fruit for dessert. The American Heart Association has healthy BBQ recipes at www.heart.org/recipes.

Looking for a fun activity to do with Dad? Do something active like a long walk or ride on the Rail Trail, the Walkway, or a hike at one of the local historic sites or parks. Maybe he would enjoy a fun game of volleyball or badminton in the backyard. Does he love to golf? Great! Walking the entire 18-hole course really gets the heart pumping.

FACTS ABOUT MEN’S HEART HEALTH:

  • Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men in the United States, killing 307,225 men in 2009—that’s 1 in every 4 male deaths
  • About 8.8 million men alive today have coronary heart disease, of these 5 million have a history of heart attack.
  • Heart disease doesn’t discriminate among men. Nearly half of all African-American adults have some form of cardiovascular disease, 48 percent of women and 46 percent of men.
  • Rates of high blood pressure among African-Americans is among the highest of any population in the world–45 percent of African-American men, 33 percent of white men and 30 percent of Hispanic men have high blood pressure.
  • As a nation, we consume too many calories fueling the prevalence of obesity in the U.S., estimated at 205 million men and 297 million women.
  • Only 24.9% of adult men met the 2008 Federal Physical Activity Guidelines in 2011.
  • Of the estimated 8.2 million Americans with undiagnosed diabetes, about 5.3 million are men.
  • Despite higher taxes and smoke-free laws, 20 percent of men are still smoking—the leading preventable cause of death in the U.S.
