Dutchess Comptroller Launching New Environmental Study

Pine Plains, NY – This week, County Comptroller Gregg Pulver announced plans to launch a study into a new road salt alternative pioneered by Rhinebeck’s Highway Superintendent to save Dutchess taxpayers money and protect our Dutchess County waterways.

“We are always looking to save taxpayer’s money and launching environmentally friendly road salt is a great way to accomplish both, saving your money and protecting our environment. The brine solution may significantly reduce costs for our highway department while removing the harmful impact traditional road salt has on our waterways, roads, and soil in Dutchess County, not to mention the excessive damage it does to vehicles by prematurely rusting,” said Gregg Pulver.

“As a farmer, I know protecting the environment is critical to growing strong crops to feed our communities – any way the comptroller office can save people money and protect the environment is a worthy innovation to look into.” said Gregg Pulver.

A number of municipalities upstate have worked in recent years to reduce road salt pollution following studies of contaminated drinking water. The “Clean Water, Safe Roads” project by the organization ADKAction has seen success, training dozens of plow operators and managers on best practices.
