Obituary, Albert Tompkins

Albert Tompkins, 50, of Millerton, NY passed away unexpectedly on February 20, 2024, due to surgical complications stemming from a prior accident. Born and raised in Dover Plains, the youngest son of Mary Ann and the late William Tompkins, Albert was a treasured member of an extended fabric of family and friends who will all remember him fondly and miss him dearly.

After attending Dover schools, Albert was employed for nearly 32 years by the Millbrook Central School District as a well-respected senior custodian who poured his heart and talents into his work. Not only did he bring a fastidious eye to the presentation of the facilities, but he kept a caring and compassionate eye out for the faculty and students there, as well. His work brought him great satisfaction and initiated many long-lasting relationships as evidenced by the smiles and warm greetings he encountered from former students, parents, and staff wherever he went.

Albert made a living at MCSD, but he made a life being an amazing father to his son and sidekick, Billy Tompkins. Billy was Albert’s greatest pride and joy. He put everything he had into single-handedly raising him to be the thoughtful and capable young man that he is today; the depth of that love and commitment was apparent to all who knew him. In addition to Billy, Albert was a fantastic stepfather who adored Ashleigh Hagadorn, Rylee Stephenson, and Haleigh (Josh) Thornton along with their daughter Parker, as if they were his own. They, too, brought Albert great pleasure and pride, and serve as testament to his unwavering devotion to being the best dad he could be.

Known for his quick sense of humor, easy smile, and laid-back demeanor, Albert could often be found cheering on the Dallas Cowboys or Brad Keselowski as he rounded the NASCAR turns, with the classic country music he loved playing in the background. Always a familiar face at family gatherings, Albert was known to take loving jabs at his siblings, then smirk when they took it to heart. Everyone knew Albert’s love and loyalty were pure and true, despite his determination to be a lifelong jokester famed for his sarcasm. In keeping with the kindness that Albert practiced in the world, organ donation was the last gesture of his generosity, selflessness, and desire to be a beacon of light in times of hardship. These traits were undoubtedly instilled by his parents, and he carried them out honorably through his actions in life.

Albert was a cherished father, son, brother, uncle, and friend. In addition to his mother and children, Albert will be sorely missed and lovingly remembered by his siblings : Sherry Valyou (Donald), Richard Blevins (Kathy), Michelle Ostavitz (Joseph), Mary Allen (Kevin), nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, and friends as he joins his father, William, and sisters Angela Brazee, Marie Blevins, and Elizabeth Pearl Tompkins, who predeceased him
