Medical Reserve Corps to Host
Pet First Aid Training on December 12th
Poughkeepsie … The Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) of Dutchess County will again offer its popular Pet First Aid Training on Tuesday, December 12, at 6 p.m., at the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response (DER), located at 392 Creek Road in Poughkeepsie. The training is free, however seating is limited and registration is required by emailing mrc@dutchessny.gov. View the event flyer.
Training participants will learn possible life-saving skills for pets, including CPR; recognizing signs of heat stroke and hypothermia; identifying gastrointestinal issues, allergies, and poisonings; and treating injuries such as burns, eye issues, wound care and more. The training will be presented by Paul S. McNamara, DVM, Chief of Surgery at the Hudson Highlands Veterinary Medical Group.
The Dutchess County Animal Response Team (DCART) will also be on hand with information on how to include pets in emergency preparedness planning. DCART is a specialized team of the Department of Emergency Response, comprised of veterinary professionals and trained volunteers from the community. They respond to assist Emergency Management at the scene of a disaster or emergencies that involve animals such as pets or livestock. Their mission is to ensure the humane care and treatment of animals in an emergency.
Dutchess MRC is comprised of both healthcare and non-healthcare volunteers as part of a national network of more than 200,000 volunteers dedicated to supporting public health infrastructure as well as disaster preparedness and response in the community.
