Obituary

Peter F. Hanes, 84, a resident of Dover Plains for 6 years and formerly of New York City and Westbrook, CT, died on September 1, 2022 at Vassar Brother Hospital Center in Poughkeepsie, NY. From 1960 to 1988, Mr. Hanes was a market research specialist with the NBC Radio Division in New York City.

Born on January 9, 1938, in Springfield, OH, he was the son of the late Robert C. and Claribel (Ferree) Hanes. Peter attended Wittenberg College and received an MBA from New York University. He also served in the United States Army Reserve.

On January 1, 2009 in Westbrook, CT, he married George J. Balchun, his partner for 47 years, who died the following June. While living in New York City, He was active with St. Bartholomews Church in Manhattan and the 61st Block Association. Mr. Hanes was an avid orchid grower and gardener, lover of dogs and enjoyed the theater.

Mr. Hanes is survived by his goddaughter, Vanessa N. Weber of Dover Plains, NY with whom he lived for 11 years; a niece, Jennifer Mullins of Springfield, OH; a great niece, Tayler-Jo Mullins Krumpak and a great nephew, Thomas Mullins.

Besides his parents and husband, he was predeceased by a brother, Phillip Hanes and a niece, Valerie Hanes.

There will be no calling hours. Committal services will be held at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York City at a later date.
