Obituary, MaryLou (Turner) Popovic

Obituary

MaryLou (Turner) Popovic, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, died Sunday, March 27, 2022, at her home in Patterson, NY. Her final days were spent surrounded by family, with the New York Yankees playing in the background.

She was born Mary Louise Turner in 1947 in Yonkers, New York, to parents William and Margaret Turner. She attended Sacred Heart High School and married high school sweetheart Michael Popovic in 1968. MaryLou was an active member of both Sacred Heart and Christ the King parishes, where her four children attended school.

When not busy wrangling those four children, she worked in administration at St. John’s Hospital, a position she held for over twenty-five years.

MaryLou was forever generous with her time and energy. Her many titles included den mother, perpetual school field-trip chaperone, caring sister, kickball-league coordinator, Irish soda bread maker, family seamstress, and full-time chauffeur for an endless string of baseball and basketball games.

Her happy place was the beach, and a lifetime of joyous memories were created in summers at the Jersey Shore, and later on, the beaches of Cape Cod. She could spend hours with her toes in the sand and a stack of books by her side.

She is survived by her devoted husband Mike, her four children, Michael (Paula Sobierajski), Christopher, Richard (Anne McBride) and Maureen (Bob Donohue), and eight loving grandchildren; Erin, Zoe, Madison, Chris, Megan, Landon, Olive, and Everett, who will never forget their “Mimi.” She was predeceased by her brother Peter in 2015.

MaryLou was a force of nature in a tiny five-foot package and will be dearly missed by all who knew her.

A wake will be held on Wednesday, March 30 from 4-8pm at the Funeral Home in Brewster, NY. The funeral mass will be on Thursday, March 31 at 10am at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church in Brewster, with the burial at Milltown Rural Cemetery in Brewster to follow.

If you prefer, in lieu of flowers a donation can be made in her name to the Parkinson’s Foundation.
