DUTCHESS COUNTY COMPTROLLER ROBIN LOIS RELEASES SPECIAL REPORT ON 2021 DUTCHESS COUNTY SALES TAX REVENUE
Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – The Office of the Dutchess County Comptroller has released a Special Report regarding the sales tax revenue in Dutchess County in 2021. “Sales tax continues to be the largest revenue source for Dutchess County Government,” the Comptroller noted in her report. Sales tax was 47% of the estimated total revenue collected in 2021, up 25% from 2020.
In addition to providing a summary of 2021 collections and dispersions to municipalities, the report outlines several major changes coming in 2022 and 2023 that will impact future sales tax funds received by Dutchess County: the exemption of Sales Tax on Clothing and Footwear costing less than $110; the proposed elimination of State diversions; the pending renegotiation of the sales tax sharing agreement with the City of Poughkeepsie and City of Beacon; and the recently proposed temporary cut and cap of county sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel.
“The elimination of sales tax on clothing and footwear will be a great benefit to the taxpayers of Dutchess County at a time when the County can absorb the revenue hit. Distributing more revenue to the Cities of Poughkeepsie and Beacon is also very important to getting a more equitable revenue stream to the Cities in need,” said Comptroller Lois.
The Comptroller concludes her letter to County Officials and Taxpayers by offering her assurance that the Comptroller’s Office will continue to monitor these changes and report on any impacts they might have on future sales tax collections and distributions.
