Rotary Donates Dictionaries to All Pawling Third Graders

By Susan Stone

On December 22nd, members of the Pawling Rotary Club attended their annual gifting of dictionaries to third grade students at Pawling Elementary School.  Members attending this much-anticipated event included Rotary President Lori Johnson and Rotarians Dick Harshbarger; Coleen Snow (Councilwoman, Town Board); Brian Avery (Director, Pawling Library); John Ammaturo; Jeff Ascher (Member, Pawling School Board); and Kim Fontana (Superintendent, Pawling Central School District).  Dictionaries were also given to third-grade students at Mizzentop Day School.

According to Dick Harshbarger, Chair of the Dictionary Project, “The 3rd grade teachers and students actually use the dictionaries for classroom activities.  In fact, the 4th grade teachers expect their incoming students to bring their dictionaries with them at the beginning of the school year.  Rotary provides additional dictionaries just in case there is a need for a few extra!”
Rotarians always look forward to hearing about all the ways in which the students utilize their dictionaries, as thank-you notes traditionally sent by the classroom teachers from the children, always include interesting and fun anecdotes.
