Obituary, Myron W. “Mike” Bates, Jr.

Myron W. “Mike” Bates, Jr., 89, a lifelong resident of Amenia, NY, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2021 at Danbury Hospital due to complication from COVID-19. Mr. Bates was a direct care provider at the Wassaic Developmental Center for 22 years retiring in 1991. He also worked at Ace Cleaners and Lynch’s Amenia Market.

Born on June 24, 1931 in Sharon, CT, he was the son of the late Myron W. Bates, Sr. and Olive (Riesdorf) Bates. Mr. Bates proudly served in the United States Army. On June 25, 1955 in Amenia, NY, he married Margaret Edgeworth who predeceased him on June 23, 2009.

Mr. Bates was an avid horseshoe player, bowler and loved to golf. He was a “character” with a witty sense of humor and always left you entertained with a joke or two.

Mr. Bates is survived by two sons, Mike Bates (Patty) of Amenia, NY and Bobby Bates and his wife, Katrina, of Lakeville, CT; a daughter, Cindy Anderson and her husband, Mark, of Dover Plains and two brothers, Carlton Bates and his wife, Merium, and Arthur Rivenburgh and his wife, Sally.

He is also survived by his beautiful granddaughters whom he adored: Lindsey (Joe) Lussa and Carly (Raymond) Anderson and two great grandsons, Chayse Michael and Tye Maddox Sherrer. He also leaves behind his loving companion, Cele Cummings and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents and wife, Mr. Bates was predeceased by a brother, William W. Bates.
