Obituary, Jane “Mema” (Calandro) Samela

Jane “Mema” (Calandro) Samela was granted her angel wings on May 8, 2020.  She was born April 22, 1947 in Eastchester (Scarsdale), NY to John and Dorothy (Suski) Calandro; pre-deceased.  She’s survived by her two brothers, John & Donald Calandro.

On February 21, 1971 she married the love of her life and best friend Joseph Samela of New Rochelle where she resided for over 30 years and raised her two daughters; Jodi Samela and Jaime Samela.

Jane was a dedicated mom first and foremost and treasured her children but her most precious gift was her title of “Mema”, grandmother to Amanda “Lulu” and Breann “BreBre” Scoca.

She and her family moved to Pawling, NY in 2003 where she made many lifelong friends.  She was a member of the Pawling Ladies Auxiliary.  She made friends wherever she’d go.  She loved to celebrate life going to bingo, dancing, listening to music and cooking/baking.

Although she may have had health issues, she gave us all such courage and hope and reminded us to “BELIEVE”.  She was what everyone would call “Wonder Woman”.

She leaves behind beloved family and treasured friends who she considered family.  Her door was always open, just as her heart was. She will be greatly missed but her memory will live on.

“My precious, precious child, I love you and I would never leave you…During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you”.

Due to COVID-19, services will be private to only immediate family but a memorial to celebrate her life will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY 12564.
