Obituary, Martin James Galvin

Martin James Galvin passed away peacefully at his Pawling home, surrounded by family, on Friday, April 19, 2019 at the age of 95.

A long-time resident of Pawling, he was born in Brooklyn on October 20, 1923, to Charles Martin and Esther Galvin.  Marty served in the US Marine Corps in WWII and fought at Iwo Jima. After the service, he had a long career in the New York City Fire Department including tours in some of New York’s most active firehouses and retiring with the rank of Lieutenant in 1969.  He married Dorothy Leonard on January 29, 1949; they just celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Marty was a member of the Fifth Marine Division Association, the Iwo Jima Survivors Association, Inc, the Emerald Association, the United Fire & Officers Association, Hasler-Kamp Post American Legion, and St. John’s Church.

Marty is survived by his wife, Dorothy, his three sons, Martin (Carmel) Galvin, Thomas (Pearl) Galvin, and John Galvin and his two daughters, Patricia Galvin Bloom (David) and Lynn Galvin Murray (David); five grandchildren, Martin Conway Galvin (Kathy), Peter Galvin, Terence Galvin, Christine Elizabeth Murray, and Melissa Campos (Jeremias); and three great-granddaughters, Olivia & Felicia Campos and Saoirse Galvin; and his brother Joseph (Josephine) Galvin.

Family and friends may pay their respects at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling Monday, April 22nd, 2-4 and 7-9 PM.  The American Legion will conduct a service at 7 PM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 10 AM at St. John’s Church, 39 East Main Street, Pawling, NY. Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
