LAST CHANCE TO NOMINATE A SENIOR OF THE YEAR

There’s still a little time to nominate your favorite senior volunteers for the Dutchess County “Senior Citizen of the Year” awards. This week is the last week when nominations can be submitted.

Think of all the good deeds your nominees have done for the community over the years, and when you’ve gathered that information together, you can send it to the Office for the Aging via regular mail, email or hand delivery. Your entries must be delivered, emailed or postmarked by this Friday, March 29th.

Enclose as much supporting material as you think you need, keeping in mind that we will not be able to return original photographs or news clippings. A nomination form is not required, but helps many people organize their thoughts. You can get one by emailing bjones@dutchessny.gov, or by looking in the winter 2018-19 “Spotlight on Seniors” newsletter, which is archived at the following link: (link will go here)

An Office for the Aging Advisory Board subcommittee will select the honorees in early April. They will be publicly congratulated at the Celebration of Aging luncheon, Monday, May 20th at Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Rd. in Wappingers Falls.

MORE CELEBRATION NEWS

The “Celebration of Aging” also honors county residents who are turning 100 years old or more in 2019, along with married couples who celebrate a 70tt or greater wedding anniversary this year. If you know anybody who fits either of those descriptions, we’d love to invite them to be our guests on May 20th. They don’t have to make up their minds right away about whether to attend, but it’s a unique opportunity for those who’ve achieved rare life milestones to share their amazing stories. We hope they can be there!

RURAL HOUSING CONVERSATION IN MILLERTON

Rural Dutchess County residents concerned about scarce housing options for seniors may want to explore an event taking place next month in Millerton.

The event is hosted by Hudson River Housing and the North East Community Center, with support from Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation.

Last year, 100 FoS volunteers made over 3,400 trips totaling more than 87,000 miles on behalf of 335 senior clients.

Important for those of you using Medicare and concerned about costs – when you schedule your annual checkup, be sure to use the phrase “annual wellness visit” and NOT the word “physical.” The wellness visit is covered by Medicare; the physical is not.
