Cricket Valley Energy Center Demonstration to take place on Saturday, January 26th, 2019, 11am- 12pm near the Cricket Valley Energy Center

Actor/activist James (Jamie) Cromwell, star of Babe and other productions, will be joining a demonstration protesting Cricket Valley Energy Center on Saturday, January 26th, 2019, 11am- 12pm near the Cricket Valley Energy Center, 2241 Rt. 22, Dover Plains, NY. Cromwell will join a group of 40 or more concerned citizens from New York and Western Connecticut as they picket (non-violent, non-confrontational) near the 1100 MW fracked gas power plant currently being erected along Route 22.

Two of Mr. Cromwell’s many, many roles include Archie Bunker’s friend Stretch Cunningham on All in the Family (1971) and a corrupt police captain in L.A. Confidential (1997).

Cromwell is an Orange County resident. He has opposed many gas infrastructure projects, including the Competitive Power Ventures (CPV) plant in Middletown (where a Cuomo advisor was convicted of bribery associated with CPV’s approval) and the successful opposition to the Crestwood proposal to store methane under Seneca Lake. Cromwell will deliver a few words after the demonstration.

Cricket Valley Energy Center is a massive 1100 MW gas-fired power plant currently under construction by the Bechtel Corporation. Dover High School and Middle School, attended by nearly 800 students, are located a mere ¾ mile from Cricket Valley. The Wingdale Elementary School, where another 311 children attend, is only two miles from Cricket Valley. Opponents object to the hundreds of tons of carcinogenic chemicals and other pollutants hazardous to human health including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOx), volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and particulate matter that Cricket Valley will produce. Opponents of the plant say if construction is completed and the power plant is allowed to begin operating, it will become one of the largest sources of air pollution in the Northeast. That means nearby residents—including children—would be exposed to even higher unacceptable levels than before. Dutchess County has a “D” air quality rating from American Lung Association.

The rally is organized by STOP Cricket Valley, LLC ( Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/STOP-Cricket-Valley-Energy-113440076023164/ )
