DCC Student Takes Top National Art Award

April 3, 2015 – Abigail Nohai won the First Place Undergraduate Award for Excellence in the National Council of Educators’ Ceramic Arts juried exhibition in Providence, R.I. for a piece created during a spring 2014 independent study course with instructor Christine Owen at Dutchess Community College.

Nohai’s work is titled “Topographic Recollections.” It was one of just eight undergraduate submissions, and the only piece created by a community college student, selected from over 500 entries nationwide for inclusion in the exhibition. The work was then chosen for top honors.

It was originally displayed in Art Centro, a community art center and gallery in Poughkeepsie, and also was included in a fall 2014 exhibition on campus.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment for Abigail,” said Dr. Pamela Edington, DCC president. “The award speaks not only to her immense talent, but the dedication of our faculty and staff who are committed to helping students reach their full potential.”

Nohai is now studying ceramics at SUNY New Paltz while also working in another independent study course at DCC.
