 SENIOR PROM DISCOUNT DEADLINE APPROACHES

Friday, September 14th, will be your last chance to obtain discounted tickets to the annual Dutchess County Senior Prom to be held on Monday, October 15th from noon until 4 p.m. at the Villa Borghese (70 Widmer Rd., Wappingers Falls). The Prom is once again co-hosted by the Pines at Poughkeepsie. The theme this year is “The Big Game,” and attendees are encouraged to dress as a participant or fan of their favorite sporting event. (No hockey skates on the dance floor, please!) The full Bob Martinson Band will provide the entertainment, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to win great prizes. Sponsors for the Senior Prom include Wingate Healthcare, EverCare At Home, Northwestern Mutual, and the Dutchess County Department of Community and Family Services.

Early registration is available for $20 per person, for those whose payment is received or postmarked by September 14th; after that date, the charge is $30 per person. Those who wish to sit together must send their payment in together. For those of you coming in a larger group and trying to figure out seating, each table seats 10 attendees. Please be sure to include the names of everyone you are paying for, along with your contact information (phone and/or email) and send your check to: Dutchess County Office for the Aging, 27 High Street, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601. The prom sells out every year, so get your reservations in early.

A printable prom sign-up form is available at the Office for the Aging website, www.dutchessny.gov/aging, and it will also be printed in the fall edition of the “Spotlight on Seniors,” due out shortly. If you sign up for Office for the Aging newsletters via the county’s Dutchess Delivery system, a link to the sign-up form will be in the issues sent out on August 31 and on every Friday in September.

If you’d like to volunteer to help our senior guests on the day of the prom, or if you’re a Dutchess County business that would like to provide a prize for the prom in exchange for promotional considerations, please contact Office for the Aging Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones at (845) 486-2555 or bjones@dutchessny.gov.

A new law gives banks and their workers greater protection against liability in order to report suspicious activity, like attempts to scam seniors — as long as they receive training to help them recognize it:

This week in senior birthdays

8/27: Actress/singer Tuesday Weld (75)

8/29: Vietnam War veteran/senator John McCain (82)

8/30: Businessman/philanthropist Warren Buffett (88)

8/31: Singer/songwriter Van Morrison (73)

9/1: Actress/comedian Lily Tomlin (79)

9/2: NFL Hall of Famer Terry Bradshaw (70)

And a bad joke to wrap it all up:

I got an email from Google that said it could read maps backward. I said to myself “That’s just spam.”
