Obituary, Eileen M. (nee Devenny) Roland

Manasquan – Eileen M. (nee Devenny) Roland, 83, of Manasquan passed away Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Queens, New York to Irish immigrants, she grew up in the Irish community surrounded by Barrys, Finegans, Sullivans and McNultys. Before working at the New York Telephone Company as a supervisor, Eileen graduated from St. Agnes Academic High School in College Point New York, number one in her class.

She married Mark V. Roland in 1959 and lived in Northport Long Island and Pawling New York while raising her five children. Her favorite place to be was on a beach, and so she moved to Manasquan in 1990 after visiting every summer since 1977.

She worked as a Branch Manager and Vice President for Key Bank Corporation in New York State and continued that work in Manasquan until she retired in 1999. Eileen was known as a mentor and friend to many young women who were fortunate enough to work with her. After retirement, she worked part-time for Jersey Shore Radiology.

Eileen was a voracious reader. If she wasn’t curled around a good book at her spot on Riddle Beach just south of the jetty, you could find her on her wraparound porch with a cool drink and an ear for conversation. She loved guests, and her house was always open just as long as you were willing to help yourself.

She was renowned for her quick wit, strong will, and sound advice.

Eileen was predeceased by her parents Thomas V. and Mary E. Barry Devenny, her husband Mark V. Roland, and her brother Thomas V. Devenny.

She is survived by her devoted children; Mark F. Roland of Beacon, NY, Brian T. Roland of Danbury, CT., Michael J. Roland of Manasquan, Elizabeth M. Roland of Manasquan, Joseph P. Roland and wife Emily DeVoti of Great Barrington, MA. , her sister Mary H. O’Connell of Point Pleasant, and her 2 grandchildren Mackinley Roland and Fionn DeVoti Roland.

Visitation will be on Saturday, June 2, 2018, from 2:00 pm until the time of the Funeral Service at 4:00 pm at  2028 Hwy. 35 at New Bedford Rd., Wall, NJ 07719

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Way, Memphis, Tenn. 38105. Envelopes will be provided at the funeral home on Saturday.
