Golden Living . . . News for Seniors, Their Families and Caregivers

Todd N. Tancredi, Director

Dutchess County Office for the Aging

MAY IS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

Each May, the nation celebrates Older Americans Month to help recognize older Americans for the contributions they make to our communities. This year’s theme is: Engage at Every Age.  The theme emphasizes that you are never too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It also celebrates the many ways in which older adults make a difference in our communities.

To honor the outstanding contributions made by older adults locally, the Dutchess County Office for the Aging hosts our annual Celebration of Aging which honors our Senior Citizens of the Year, residents age 100 or older, and couples married 70 or more years.

Awardees this year are Patricia Malin of Pleasant Valley, Ronald Seeley of Hyde Park, and Barbara and Ronald Nolan of Pleasant Valley.  In addition, Joy Godin of Wingdale and Jack Fenton of Hyde Park were selected to each receive a Senior Achievement Award.  They will all be honored at the annual “Celebration of Aging” luncheon on Monday, May 21st at noon at the Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Road in Wappingers Falls.

For admission information, visit www.dutchessny.gov/aging, email bjones@dutchessny.gov, or call (845) 486-2555.  We have extended the deadline for lower-priced admission to the luncheon through Friday, May 4th while tickets remain available. This week only, you can enjoy the uplifting Celebration of Aging for $25 per person or $250 per table; after the 4th, the price increases to $40 per person.

Each centenarian and one guest are admitted for free, as are all couples married 70 years or more. If those descriptions match somebody you know in Dutchess County, it’s not too late for them to be honored. If their 100th birthday or 70th anniversary isn’t until later this year, that’s okay.

Hearing our honorees’ stories of perseverance and successful aging is sure to brighten your day. Centenarians are the fastest-growing age segment in much of the developed world, and their numbers are expected to grow by a factor of eight between now and 2050.

Our best estimates indicate there are at least 60 centenarians living in Dutchess County, which means that you may have a centenarian for a neighbor. There’s still time to ask them if they’d like to attend the Celebration of Aging.

The Celebration of Aging is proudly sponsored by EverCare At Home, Marquis Home Care, Northwestern Mutual, The Pines at Poughkeepsie, and Wingate Healthcare.

The Dutchess County Department of Behavioral and Community Health is performing a full scale Point Of Dispensing (POD) exercise which tests our ability to dispense medication to the general population quickly and efficiently in the event of a health emergency.  You, as a volunteer actor, would be playing a member of the public who is attending the POD to receive their medication.

WORLD ELDER ABUSE AWARENESS DAY 2018 (Fri 6/15)

This annual event had been held in Poughkeepsie for many years, but it has drawn attention from around the Hudson Valley. Organizers say a larger venue was needed to host this year’s event – therefore, it’s been scheduled for Friday, June 15, at the Aquinas Theatre at Mount Saint Mary College in the City of Newburgh (330 Powell Ave.). According to organizers, in future years, the event will be held in rotating locations including Dutchess County, and the event remains open to all guests from any county who register in advance while there’s space.

Dutchess County will be represented at the conference by Patricia Sheldon, Director of Adult Protective Services. Additionally, Dutchess County Executive Marcus J. Molinaro will join Orange County Executive Steven Neuhaus at the conference for opening remarks. The event is presented by EverCare with cooperation from St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital and Mount Saint Mary College.

Space will be limited, so register by emailing weaad2018@evercare.org, or by calling the Orange County Office for the Aging at (845) 615-3700.
