LAST DAYS FOR SENIORS OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS

This is the last week you can submit nominations for the 2018 Senior Citizen of the Year awards. Mailed entries must be postmarked by Saturday, March 31st; emailed entries must likewise arrive by that date; and hand-delivered entries must arrive at the Office for the Aging by 5 p.m. on Friday, March 30th.

The OFA Advisory Board next month will choose honorees in three categories: Senior Male of the Year, Female of the Year, and Couple of the Year. They’ll be the special guests at OFA’s “Celebration of Aging” luncheon, taking place on Monday, May 21st at Villa Borghese, 70 Widmer Rd., Wappinger.

Tell us about any seniors whose efforts on behalf of the Dutchess County community deserve wider recognition. You may nominate as many seniors as you’d like, in all three categories. You may also nominate a senior who has been nominated in previous years but wasn’t chosen.

For a nomination form, contact the Office for the Aging or look in the archived Winter 2017-18 edition of the “Spotlight on Seniors” newsletter, available at this shortened link: https://go.usa.gov/xQqs8

The “Celebration of Aging” also honors Dutchess seniors who will be 100 or more years old this year, and married Dutchess couples who will celebrate an anniversary of 70 years or more this year. Those honored guests are eligible for free admission to the “Celebration of Aging.” If you have a family member living in Dutchess who fits either description, let us know about their amazing feat by getting in touch with OFA Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones, at bjones@dutchessny.gov or (845) 486-2555.

For those of you who are not quite 100 and not yet married 70 years, a reserved seat with lunch is $25 per person if paid by April 27th. After that date, the price increases to $40 per seat.

In many cases, our honored centenarians were eyewitnesses to history that most of us only learned about secondhand. Our centenarian honorees have seen everything from the 1927 Yankees to the stock market crash of 1929 and Great Depression, and our long-time married couples recall heading to Europe or the Pacific to serve our country in World War II right after their weddings. The stories they tell each year are indeed moving, and we hope you can join us on May 21st to celebrate their lives and wish them many more happy years to come.

All your group needs to provide is a venue that’s wheelchair-accessible and open to the public, with space to set up a projector and screen.  We have our own projector and screen – but if you have those, let us know.

We feature presentations on Successful Aging, Office for the Aging services, Medicare/Medicaid, senior housing, a wide range of topics related to nutrition, and more!

MORE MATTER OF BALANCE CLASSES – BUT ACT FAST!

We’ve added two more sessions to our popular series of “A Matter of Balance” falls reduction program, supported by Health Quest – but spaces in these classes tend to go quickly.

Classes meet once a week for eight weeks. Classes are open to all Dutchess residents concerned about falls prevention who are 60+, ambulatory and can problem-solve.

We have one series of classes beginning in April at a location in the Town of Wappinger, and another series beginning in May at a location in the Town of Beekman. If you’re interested, contact the Office for the Aging at (845) 486-2555.

If you’re interested in a future installment of “A Matter of Balance” at a location closest to you, or if your preferred location is full, call us and we’ll get you on a waiting list. No need to call again if you’re already on a waiting list.

SPRING CLEANING TIME (PART I)

It looks like last week’s snow really was the last of it for the winter, although we’ve had our share of snow in Dutchess in April (1982, 1997) and even May (1977). But assuming that this really IS spring this time, let’s focus on deciding what items around the home need to stay, and which need to be safely disposed of – especially hazardous materials.

Dutchess County’s Division of Solid Waste Management is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste and Recycling event on Saturday, April 8, starting at 8 a.m., at the Dutchess County Resource Recovery Agency’s facililties, 96 Sand Dock Rd. in Poughkeepsie, just south of IBM. This event is open to Dutchess residents only. Registration and $10 prepayment are required and can be made at www.dutchessny.gov/solidwaste, or by calling (845) 486-3604 during regular weekday business hours.

            Acceptable Items are as follows:

Product Containers Marked: “Warning”, “Hazardous”, “Flammable”, “Poisonous”, “Corrosive”

Photo chemicals, non-latex driveway sealer, pool chemicals, creosote, kerosene, flammable liquids, metal polish, turpentine, stains, varnishes, strippers, thinners, gasoline/oil mixture, brake fluid, pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, chemical fertilizers, adhesives, resins, solvents, oil & lead based paints (no latex!), mercury containing devices, computer monitors, CPU’s, fax machines, printers, TV’s, stereos, telephones, lithium & sealed lead acid batteries (no automotive!), fluorescent tubes.

Do Not Bring:

Waste in containers larger than 10 gallons, ammunition or explosives, asbestos products, latex driveway sealer & latex paint, building or construction debris, tires, furniture, medical waste, pharmaceuticals, propane or other flammable gas cylinders, radioactive materials, scrap metal, metal drums or empty containers, motor oil, car batteries, alkaline or rechargeable batteries.

We’ll have more spring cleaning tips in the next issue or two of the Aging News.
