NEWTON—Documentary short films produced by two talented Lasell College communication majors are in contention for the top prize in the third season of New England Sports Network’s (NESN) Next Producer, a competition with students attending New England area colleges vying for a grand prize of $20,000 and a yearlong internship at Boston-based NESN.

Described by NESN as “part Shark Tank, part America’s Got Talent,” Next Producer invites individual students or teams of students to enter their sports-related short films (approximately four minutes in length) to be judged by legendary television producers Tom Werner (Roseanne, Third Rock from the SunThat 70’s Show), who also serves as Chairman of the Red Sox organization, and Brad Falchuk (GleeAmerican Horror Story). Now entering its third season, Next Producer will begin airing on February 17, highlighting two films in each episode.

The entries submitted by senior Greg Camillone of Wingdale, New York, and sophomore Alexandra “Allie” Clancy of Beverly, Massachusetts, are among the final 12 films in contention for the top prize. Clancy’s episode will be broadcast on February 24, and Camillone’s will air on March 10.

The winner of Next Producer will be announced live during a Red Sox home game in April. A $1,000 cash prize will also be awarded to the filmmaker voted “fan favorite,” as determined by popular vote on the competition’s website.

Of the 12 competing films, only three will be selected by Werner and Falchuk as finalists. The final three will be given an additional assignment by Red Sox marketing executives: Create a 60-second short about the team.

Camillone’s short, “Get Your Head in the Game,” focuses on the significant impact of multiple concussions on a student athlete. Clancy’s film, “Doug Santos —Opportunity,” features an undocumented high school football star whose academic and athletic future is uncertain after his parents return to Brazil and he struggles to navigate life on his own.

Both students were encouraged and mentored by Meryl Perlson, Lasell’s program director for communication. “This competition is a great opportunity to highlight the strengths that we know exist at Lasell,” said Perlson. “We have a dynamic media program and students can hone their storytelling craft while they study here.”

Clancy, who as a high school student received awards for the public service announcements she produced, is thrilled to have made it to the finals. “This is an incredible opportunity, and it’s almost unreal since I am only a sophomore,” said Clancy. “I am so thankful.”

For Camillone, who finished his coursework in December and will graduate in May, his participation “was a perfect opportunity for me as a senior to practice some skills and to learn things along the way. I thought it would also be a great networking experience and it has been.”
