Bicyclist Killed in Route 6 Crash Identified

 

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports that the bicyclist who was struck by a car and killed on Route 6 in Southeast on Friday, August 25th, has been identified. The victim was Mr. David Eric Wellin, aged 68, who lived on Lilac Lane in Danbury, Connecticut.

According to preliminary investigative findings, Mr. Wellin was bicycling westbound along Route 6, just east of Starr Ridge Road, at about 9:05 A.M. on Friday morning. He was reportedly travelling along the right-hand shoulder of the road and tried making a left turn across the roadway, when he crossed into the path of a car that was overtaking him from behind in the westbound lane of the road. The car struck the bicycle broadside and Mr. Wellin was fatally injured. He was taken by ambulance to Danbury Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car involved in the collision has been identified as Mr. Ryan T. Smith, aged 18, of Maple Hill Drive in Mahopac, New York, who was travelling alone in a 2000 Honda Civic. He was not injured in the crash.

No charges have been filed in connection with the case. The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing.
