Obituary, Bertha E. Howe

Bertha E. Howe, 94 of Pleasant Valley, died peacefully at her residence on Saturday, July 15, 2017. Born in Poughkeepsie on October 2, 1922, she was the daughter of Elmer and Mabel Argue Quick. Bertha was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, Class of 1940. She also was a graduate of Poughkeepsie Business Institute, Class of 1941.

On June 9, 1946 at Christ Episcopal Church in Poughkeepsie, Bertha married John C. Howe and were married 63 years until Mr. Howe’s passing on January 22, 2010. Bertha began her career with A. C. Sutton of Poughkeepsie from 1941-1946. From 1957-1984 she was employed as secretary to Dorothy Albertson, Principal at Traver Road Elementary School in Pleasant Valley. Following her retirement in 1984, Mrs. Howe was appointed Deputy Town Clerk of Pleasant Valley as well as Deputy Tax Collector until 2012.

Bertha is survived by her 3 children; Margaret Pritchard and her husband Lee of New Paltz, Donald Howe and his wife Phylis of Pleasant Valley, and Jeanne Baganz and her husband Skip of Esopus; 10 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; her sister, Lillian Goldsbary of Poughkeepsie and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her sister, E. Muriel Persons.

Visitation will be Thursday, July 20 from 4-7 pm at  1605 Main St., Pleasant Valley. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 21 at 10 am from the funeral home. Interment will be private in the family plot at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
