State Police Middletown investigate fatal on State Route 17

The New York State Police are investigating a fatal accident on State Route 17 in the Town of Wallkill. On the night of Thursday May 11, 2017, a group of teenagers were crossing State Route 17 when one of the teenagers was struck in the westbound lane. The teenager, later identified as Hope Vandermark, 15 of Middletown, NY, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Nicholas Hurst, 20, of Bloomingburg, was operating the 2002 Chevrolet pick-up truck that struck Vandermark. Hurst was not charged in the incident. The investigation revealed that he was not impaired, distracted or speeding. The investigation is ongoing.
