Yorktown, New York – On May 7, 2017, at approximately 7:40 p.m., the New York State Police in Hawthorne responded to a one-car fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on the Taconic State Parkway by mile post marker 18.4.

An investigation indicated that a 2003 Ford Taurus, operated by William H. Smith, age 71, of Hopewell Junction, New York, was traveling northbound on the Taconic State Parkway.  Smith’s vehicle exited the roadway and struck the median guiderail.  The vehicle then crossed all three northbound lanes of traffic and came to rest against the guiderail on the eastern shoulder.

Smith was transported to Hudson Valley Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.  A preliminary investigation indicates that Smith may have suffered from a medical event prior to his vehicle leaving the roadway.  His cause of death is pending autopsy and toxicology.
