JAMES L. BELLUCCI OF PAWLING ACCEPTED FOR WEST POINT SUMMER LEADERS EXPERIENCE

James L. Bellucci, a junior at Pawling High School in Pawling, New York, has been selected to be among 1,000 attendees at West Point’s prestigious Summer Leaders Experience (SLE) in June.

More than 5,000 juniors nationwide applied to SLE, which offers outstanding high school juniors the opportunity to experience life at West Point.  SLE attendees live in the cadet barracks and participate in academic, leadership, athletic, and military workshops.  The one-week seminars are designed to help juniors with their college-selection process, while giving them an idea of the importance of leadership and sound decision-making in their education, careers, and lives, in general.  All SLE attendees participate in virtual-reality war simulation and military and physical fitness training, and, in addition, each student selects three of the 15 offered workshops.

James consistently receives the highest academic honors while balancing three varsity sports, as well as leadership and community service activities.  In 2017, he placed 3rd in Wrestling in Section 1 in his weight class.  He also earned Wrestling Section 1, All- League in both 2016 and 2017.  In Varsity Track, he placed 4th in League in the shot put during his sophomore year and was awarded Most Valuable Junior for Varsity Football during the 2016 season.

James is currently President of the National Math Honor Society and a member of the National Honor Society and National Science Honor Society.  He is President of the Pawling High School Chess Club and volunteers for several local organizations.  A member of the Pawling Math Team, James was selected for the 2017 National Moody’s Mega Math Challenge, the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth, the Georgia Institute of Technology HS Engineering Summer Program, and the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute HS Engineering Summer Program.

Bellucci comes from a military background.  His father, James F. Bellucci, was a Captain in the US Army Corp of Engineers and served in Desert Storm as the platoon leader of the 511th Engineer Dive Detachment.

James expressed appreciation for this opportunity, “I am thankful that the teachers at Pawling High School have provided me with a solid academic foundation and numerous opportunities that have allowed me to reach goals such as this one.”

The United States Military Academy at West Point is a four-year, co-educational, federally funded undergraduate college located 50 miles north of New York City.  A preeminent leader-development institution, West Point was founded in 1802 as America’s first college of engineering.  Since then, West Point has grown in size and stature, but remains committed to the task of producing commissioned leaders of character for America’s Army.
