Verplanck man charged with burglary and violating order of protection

Cortlandt, New York – On March 10, 2017, New York State Police from the Cortlandt Barracks arrested Michael R. Schmidt, 29 years old, of Verplanck, New York, for Burglary in the 2nd Degree, a Class C Felony, and Criminal Contempt 1st Degree, a Class E Felony.

On March 10, 2017, Troopers were dispatched to a domestic disturbance on 5th Street in the hamlet of Verplanck.  The investigation indicated that Schmidt unlawfully entered the victims home, violating an order of protection.  He reportedly choked the victim and fled the residence when a Good Samaritan overheard the commotion confronted him.  Police arrived on scene and placed Schmidt in custody.

Schmidt was arraigned by the Town of Cortlandt Justice McCarthy and remanded to the Westchester County Jail.  Schmidt is scheduled to return to the Town of Cortlandt Court on March 16, 2017.
