Slow: The Long Exposure Photography of Justin P. Goodhart

The Cultural Arts Coalition presents “Slow: The Long Exposure Photography of Justin P. Goodhart” with an opening reception on Friday, March 31stfrom 7-9PM at the Studio Around the Corner 67 Main Street in Brewster, NY. This event is free and open to the public.

“SLOW” is an exploration of long exposure photography and is comprised of works made over the last year or so. The show features exposures of anywhere from 1/2 second to over an hour in length. Justin grew up in the Adirondack region and has always had a strong connection to the land and the beauty of the world around us.  Following college and starting a career in New England he returned to New York in 2009 and currently lives in Patterson.  Mr. Goodhart explains, “After having been a casual photographer for many years it was the beauty of the Hudson Valley that served as inspiration for me to start taking photography more seriously.”

There are 3 major reasons Mr. Goodhart would choose to employ a slow shutter speed:

  1. To capture what the human eye can see, but the camera cannot, except by the use of a slow shutter.
  2. To capture what the human eye cannot see but that which the camera can by extending the exposure.
  3. To capture a sense of the passing of time verses a single moment.

As patrons view the images in the show, they are encouraged to think about these three principles.  Each photograph has the shutter length identified, so they can think about how using a slow shutter has helped to create them. About The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition

The Town of Southeast Cultural Arts Coalition is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to creating and sustaining cultural arts within the Town of Southeast and its surrounding region. TOSCAC was established as a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation in August 2010 with the purpose, as detailed in the incorporation papers, “… to promote and raise funds for the development and effective management of affordable, accessible performance space that will provide citizens of the Town of Southeast opportunities to participate in and appreciate cultural arts, including lectures, theater, dance, film, music, visual arts, and inclusive community events.”

Our current focus is the renovation of the Southeast Old Town Hall, a historic landmark within the Village of Brewster and a perfect venue to serve as a cultural hub. The Old Town Hall has been described as a “Jewel in the Center of Brewster” and its renovation will help foster the revitalization of downtown Brewster.
