Cristina Pato Brings the Sounds of Spain to Pawling
The Pawling Concert Series resumes its forty-third season on Friday, March 31, 2017 with a powerful burst of Spring sunshine called the Cristina Pato Quartet. The McGuinness
Family is sponsoring this unusual and joyful music to be heard at 8 pm in the Gardiner Theater on the campus of Trinity Pawling School. The Quartet features piano, accordion,
bagpipes, double bass and drums in her suite, “Latina”, composed in the exhuberant dance rhythms of lando, joropo and festejo.
Born in northern Spain Cristina is a Galician bagpipe master, a classical and jazz prodigy and dedicated educator. She has appeared on major stages throughout the world and is an active member of cellist Yo Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble. He refers to her as a “pop star”. Her style is full of passion and energy, fusing Latin music, jazz, pop and contemporary sounds.
Hailed by The New York Times as “a virtuosic burst of energy” and by The Wall Street Journal as “one of the living masters of the gaita,” Galician bagpiper, pianist and educator Cristina Pato enjoys an active professional career devoted to Galician popular and classical music and jazz, and her dual careers have led to performances on major stages throughout Europe, USA, India, Africa and China.
Pato is a member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble and a founding member of its Leadership Council. She holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Collaborative Piano from Rutgers University. With her quartet, she plays piano as well as the bagpipe.
Renowned for her exuberant showmanship, she fuses Sephardic, Latin, jazz, pop and contemporary influences to create a high-energy, flamboyant and virtuosic performance.
