Newburgh, New York – On November 14, 2016, New York State Police from the Wappinger barracks charged 24-year-old Angel J. Gomez of the Bronx, New York, with Reckless Endangerment in the 1st Degree,  Assault in the 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of Stolen Property 3rd Degree, Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer 3rd Degree, and Aggravated Unlicensed Operation 2nd Degree.

At approximately 9:50 p.m., a Trooper from the Wappinger barracks conducted a vehicle and traffic stop on Interstate 84 in the area of mile post marker 40 in the City of Beacon.  While on the traffic stop, the patrol vehicle’s license plate reader alerted the officer to a stolen vehicle traveling westbound on I84.  Trooper Nigel Barnett, a 10 year veteran of the state police, cleared the traffic stop and patrolled westbound where he located the stolen Toyota Camry traveling westbound on the Newburgh Beacon Bridge.  Trooper Barnett activated his emergency lighting and stopped the vehicle on the Newburgh Beacon Bridge.  As he exited his patrol car the driver of the Camry accelerated and promptly exited I84 via exit 10N.  The driver of the Camry, later identified as Angel Gomez, travelled on State Route 9W northbound for approximately one mile.  Gomez then entered the southbound lane on State Route 9W and struck a 1997 Toyota Avalon, operated by 63-year-old Eustaquio D. Soriano of Newburgh, head-on.  The impact caused the Avalon to enter the northbound lane where it was struck by the 2016 Dodge police car operated by Trooper Barnett.  Gomez continued northbound in the southbound lane and struck a 2005 Dodge Ram pick-up truck, operated by Peter Floor Jr., age 18 of Marlborough, and a 2002 Chrysler PT Cruiser, operated by 58-year-old William J. Fulgoni, of Milton, before coming to rest.

Gomez and his passenger, 23-year-old Krystall A. Solivan, exited the Camry and fled on foot.  Both subjects were located a short distance from the crash and placed in custody.  Solivan was later released from police custody and is not facing criminal charges at this time.

Trooper Barnett was transported to Vassar Brothers Hospital where he was treated and released with non-life threatening injuries.  Soriano and his passenger were transported to St. Luke’s Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Gomez was arraigned before Judge Jude T. Martini in the Town of Newburgh Justice Court and remanded to the Orange County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond.

The State Police were assisted by the Town of Newburgh Police Department, the City of Newburgh Police Department and the New York State Police from Troop F.
