Next Stop: Kimlin Cider Mill in Poughkeepsie on October 14th

Poughkeepsie, NY… The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail series continues next week at the Kimlin Cider Mill, located at 140 Cedar Avenue in Poughkeepsie, on Friday, October 14th, at 6 p.m. The Historic Tavern Trail, in its inaugural year, brings history and local cuisine together, while introducing the community to iconic locales, with each installment held at different historic location featuring a brief presentation on the site’s history.

The Kimlin Cider Mill started as an agricultural barn serving the Kimlin Family farm, which began operation in the 1850s. In the 1920s, Ralph R. Kimlin transformed the structure into a cider mill, with the intention of adding a museum of farm tools to the operation over time. The building served as a production and retail space for cider for most of the twentieth century and was a favorite attraction for local school children and Vassar College students. The mill operation closed in 1990 and is now preserved by the Cider Mill Friends of Open Space & Historic Preservation.

This installment of the Tavern Trail offers an advanced viewing of the vendors and displays on hand for the annual Old Fashioned Cider Tasting event that kicks off at 11 AM on October 15th. Attendees at the tavern trail program will be able to sample local ciders, hear a presentation on the mill’s history and the process of cider production, and enjoy a seasonal bonfire in the adjoining field. Refreshments will be available for purchase and the Cider Mill Friends will be conducting a raffle to raise funds for further preservation work. Parking will be available along the East side of Cedar Avenue, on Kimlin Court (just South of the mill), on Cedar Pond Lane (just North of the mill), and on the grass lot just North of the mill. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with parking.

Dutchess County Historian William P. Tatum III said, “The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail highlights many of our iconic buildings and the history contained in our epic landscape. These programs are a fun way to explore the links between history, cuisine, and local culture that make our area such a vibrant place.”

The Tavern Trail is a collaborative endeavor between the Dutchess County Department of History, the Dutchess County Historical Society, and local historical societies to create an innovative program that highlights the county’s rich history.

The next Tavern Trail program will take place at Dutch’s Spirits in Pine Plains on October 28th for a special Halloween-themed gathering.
