**UPDATE**
On September 9, 2016, Nerim Sinanovic was charged with four counts of Criminally Negligent Homicide, a Class E Felony, Reckless Driving, and Unreasonable Speed following an indictment signed in the Westchester County Superior Court on September 8, 2016.
The crash, which occurred on August 15, 2015 claimed the life of Donald M. Mulvaney, Ledell Elizabeth Mulvaney, Katherine Ledell Mulvaney and Leona Sinanovic.
Sinanovic was charged criminally when an investigation revealed that the defendant took his hands off the steering wheel, turned towards the back seat and steered with his knees. This caused the vehicle to veer to the right. The defendant’s wife then grabbed the steering wheel and the vehicle veered left and continued up and over the dividing center median between the north and southbound lanes.
Sinanovic surrendered himself this morning at the Hawthorne barracks. The defendant was arraigned in the Westchester County Justice Court where he was remanded to the Westchester County Jail on $10,000 bail.
Yorktown, New York – On August 15, 2015 at approximately 2:50 p.m., New York State Police from the Hawthorne barracks responded to a four-car collision that occurred on the southbound side of the Taconic State Parkway, just north of Baldwin Road.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2004 BMW sport utility vehicle operated by 33-year-old Nerim Sinanovic was traveling northbound when it exited the roadway onto the center median and became airborne into the southbound lanes. The BMW struck a 2001 Toyota operated by Donald M. Mulvaney, 63 years old, of Brooklyn, New York, and a 2015 Ford operated by 28-year-old Tara F. Duggins, of Hampton, Virginia. A 2003 Acura, operated by Jennifer Enriquez, 27 years old, of Peekskill, New York, sideswiped Mr. Mulvaney’s vehicle and came to rest after striking the center guiderail.
At this time, there are three confirmed fatalities associated with this crash. Leona Sinanovic, 2 years old, of the Bronx, a rear passenger of the BMW died as a result of the collision. Mr. Sinanovic and two other passengers in his vehicle were transported to Westchester Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. Ledell Mulvaney, age 61, and Katherine Mulvaney, 31 years old, both of Brooklyn, New York, were traveling in the vehicle operated by Donald Mulvaney. Ledell and Katherine Mulvaney were pronounced deceased following the collision. Mr. Mulvaney remains in critical condition at this time.
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact SP Hawthorne Bureau of Criminal Investigation by calling (914) 742-6400.
