SEPTEMBER “SUCCESSFUL AGING” PRESENTATION IN MILLBROOK

There are plenty of steps you can take to ensure you live independently and safely in your own home for as long as is possible. To learn about those steps, the Office for the Aging hosts free “Successful Aging” presentations in communities throughout Dutchess County. You are never too young, too old, or too frail to start making the changes that will help ensure you age more successfully.  Office for the Aging Outreach Coordinator Brian Jones will count down the 12 steps to successful aging in a presentation at the Millbrook Library (3 Friendly Lane, off Franklin Avenue) on Thursday, September 8th at 11 a.m.

It’s easy for your civic organization, senior group, or house of worship to host a “Successful Aging” presentation. We can bring our presentations to all corners of Dutchess County, rain or shine. Get in touch with us at (845)486-2555, or bjones@dutchessny.gov for details.

CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP MEETS

Do you find yourself caring for aging loved ones? Could you use some guidance to be sure you continue to take care of yourself and avoid the consequences of burning the candle at both ends? Join the Caregiver Support Group, which meets on the third Monday of every month from 5 to 6 p.m. at MidHudson Regional Hospital’s licensed home care headquarters, 26 IBM Road in Poughkeepsie. The group is facilitated by trained registered nurses and provides helpful tools and techniques to care for your loved ones, and shares information on what community services might be available to assist you. Advance registration is required for this free event, which takes place next on Monday, September 19. Call (845) 483-5551 and ask for Dominique Mindur. The group will also meet on October 17, November 21 and December 19. This program is funded in part by the U.S. Administration on Aging, New York State Office for the Aging and Dutchess County Office for the Aging.

ON THE WINGS OF FREEDOM

The popular “Wings of Freedom” tour will return to the Dutchess County Airport beginning Friday, Sept. 9, and running through Sunday, Aug. 11. Vintage military aircrafts, some of which were flown in World War II, will be on display for visitors to tour.

Veterans of World War II can tour the aircraft at no charge; tour prices are $12 for adults and $6 for children 12 and younger. The tour will take place Fridayfrom 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday; a memorial ceremony to honor and remember victims and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks will take place at 11 a.m. Sunday.

This will mark the third straight year the “Wings of Freedom” tour will stop at the Dutchess County Airport. The Collings Foundation, which presents the tour, typically doesn’t schedule repeat appearances, to it’s a rare treat to have the tour back again – an opportunity that shouldn’t be missed.
