NEW MILFORD – A New Milford police officer was shot Sunday afternoon after Officers responded to a call for a suicidal man that resulted in a standoff at a condominium at 30 Candlewood Lake Road South.

Police received reports that a man had fired several rounds in his condo according to New Milford Police.

The incident with a 47-year old man lasted about 30 minutes before the man walked out of the condo with a hand gun.  New Milford Officer Charles Cochran then used a stun gun on the man to subdue him and at that point the gun went off.

It’s unclear if the gun went off before or after the stun gun was used, but the man’s gun went off and a bullet grazed Cochran’s lower leg.

Officers were able to take the man into custody without injuring him.

The Officer was taken to New Milford Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries  in “satisfactory condition.”

The officer was in good spirits when fellow officers visited him at the hospital Sunday afternoon. Cochran has been with the New Milford department for two years and was a Hartford police officer before that.
