ELDER ABUSE CONFERENCE IN POUGHKEEPSIE

Elder abuse is traditionally thought of as physical abuse of the elderly – but neglect, financial exploitation, emotional abuse, abandonment and even self-neglect in mentally-competent seniors are also forms of elder abuse.  Thousands of sometimes frail, vulnerable older adults are victimized by both men and women who are often family members, friends or trusted confidants. Friday, June 10 is World Elder Abuse Day, and in observance the Coalition on Elder Abuse of Dutchess County and the Mediation Center of Dutchess County are hosting a conference on that day from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. for seniors and those who care for them. The conference takes place at the Poughkeepsie Elks lodge, 29 Overocker Rd. The keynote speaker will be Arlene Markarian, chief of the elder abuse unit at the Kings County (Brooklyn) district attorney’s office. The event is free but registration is required. Register at www.dutchessmediation.org or call (845) 471-7213, extension 201. Refreshments will be available, and the event includes a silent auction. For more information from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services on elder abuse, go to http://go.usa.gov/cJV5R. In the meantime, while it is not your role to verify that abuse may be occurring, you should alert others about your suspicions.  If someone is in immediate danger, call 911.  Otherwise, you may contact Dutchess County Protective Services for Adults Intake at 486-3300, weekdays between 9am and 5pm to request assistance, or the Dutchess County Sheriff Support Services Unit at 486-3829.  The toll-free Dutchess County Helpline at 877-485-9700 is available 24 hrs, 7 days a week for mental health and substance abuse questions.

TO MARKET, TO MARKET

For Dutchess residents, “eat your vegetables” is something to look forward to, thanks to the great variety of delicious produce grown in Dutchess County – and a great way to get more vegetables and fruits into your diet is as simple as a trip to your local farmers market. There’s a farmers market in every corner of the county and lots of places in between, and many of them will accept SNAP (formerly called “food stamps”) as full payment.

Farmers markets also help ensure your dollar stays local and supports local farmers and, in turn, the local economy. You can find a countywide listing of farmers markets online at www.dutchesstourism.com. Click on “What To Eat,” and on the drop down menu, you’ll find the link to the Farmers Markets in Dutchess County that includes the location,  days, times and other helpful information.
