State Police investigate apparent suicide from the Bear Mountain Bridge

Cortlandt, New York – On Sunday, May 8, 2016, at about 6:24 p.m., New York State Police from the Cortlandt barracks were dispatched to the Bear Mountain Bridge for a report of a man who had jumped from the center of the bridge span.

Preliminary investigation indicates that a 27-year-old man from Pomona had stopped his vehicle in the driving lane and jumped over the southern railing of the bridge span into the Hudson River.  The tentative victim identification was made by evidence recovered from the victim’s vehicle.  State Police are utilizing SCUBA resources and side-scan sonar to locate the victim at this time.

The investigation into the apparent suicide is ongoing.

The State Police were assisted by the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department, New York State Park Police, Continental Village Fire Department, and Fort Montgomery Fire Department
