Obituary, George E. Gaine

 

Fishkill – George E. Gaine, a Dutchess County resident since 1968, formerly of Peekskill and Long Island, died on Saturday, April 30, 2016 at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh. He was 81.

Son of the late Thomas and Mary A. (McCullagh) Gaine, he was born in Long Island on December 14, 1934. He graduated from Smithtown Branch High School in 1952, where he was voted “Best Looking”. After school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served aboard the U.S.S. Hornet during Korean Conflict.

George was a State Trooper for 24 years, last serving Troop K in Stormville until retiring in 1981. In 1982, he began working as a carrier for the U.S. Postal Service in Cold Spring, where he remained for another 16 years.

His hobbies included softball, bowling, and cards. He loved ice cream and was a dedicated fan of the NY Yankees and NY Giants. He always had an interest in accounting and prepared taxes for his relatives & friends for many years, especially following his retirement. Above all else, he cherished spending time and celebrating special occasions with his family and grandchildren.

On January 12, 1963, he married Dorothy R. Delaney, his wife of 40 years. She predeceased him on December 24, 2003.

George is survived by two daughters, Tracey Gaine and Lynne Riccoboni, both of Poughkeepsie; his son, Edward Gaine of Fishkill; his grandchildren, Ashley Wagner & her husband Anthony Verano, Courtney Wagner, Steven Wagner, Emma Gaine, and Jackson Gaine; his brother, James Gaine of Florida; his brother, John Gaine & his wife Edee of South Carolina; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Claudette Gaine of Long Island, Joseph Delaney of Peekskill, and Robert & Doreen Delaney of Beacon. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews along with their families.

In addition to his wife and parents, other predeceased members of his family include his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas & Marie Gaine; his brother, William Gaine; as well as his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rosemary Gaine, James Delaney, and William & Susan Delaney.

Calling hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill. A memorial service will begin at 7 p.m. immediately following calling hours.
