Obituary, Lucy Etta Smith

 

Lucy Etta Smith, 86, a life-time resident of Pawling, passed away at her home in Pawling on Thursday, April 28, 2016.

Born in Pawling on July 27, 1929, she was the daughter of Clifford and Isabel (Osborn) Ryea.  She married Elmer Smith on August 26, 1972; Elmer passed away November 24, 2005.

Lucy worked at the L.A. 5 & 10 store in Pawling and did private home health care. Lucy was very active in the Pawling community, volunteering at the Pawling Resource & Service Center, and working every Pawling Fire Department carnival in the soft drink booth.  She was a past commander of the Hasler-Kamp Post American Legion Auxiliary, and sold hundreds of poppies for the Legion.  She was also a friend of Bill W. for 40 years, and a member of the Central Baptist Church of Pawling.

She is survived by four sons, Robert (Suzanne) of Wappingers Falls, Elmer “Rusty” (Patricia) of Pawling, David (Jackie) of Blossburg, PA, and Bruce (Jill) of Pine Plains; four daughters, Constance Cornell (Don) of Pawling, Carol Dykeman of Missoula, MT, Janet Townsend of LaGrange, and Patricia Schaniel (Richard) of Spring Hill, FL; grandchildren, Rebecca Cornell, Andrew (Beth Anne) Cornell, Goldie (William) Hamilton, Monica Forte, Christopher (Jill) Smith, Timothy Smith, Janette and Joanna Townsend, Keith (Jennifer) Schaniel, Josh Schaniel, and Joseph (Michelle) Schaniel, Judy (Gary) Stoerzinger, Tye (Lauryn) Dehna, Tanya and Robbie III (Naomi) Dykeman; great-grandchildren, Gillian, Libby, Scout, Jonathan, Kayla, Kevin, LeeAnne, Kiera, Dorothy, Gary, Alexis, Kaden, Lathan, and Tye Cooper; two great-great granddaughters; and her sister-in-law, Lois (Dykeman) Ryea, of Randolph, NH.

Family and friends may call at the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, Monday, May 2nd 2-4 and 7-9 PM.  Friends of Bill W. will conduct a private service at the funeral home at 6:30 PM.  A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 AM at the Central Baptist Church of Pawling; burial will follow in Pawling Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lucy’s memory to the Central Baptist Church of Pawling.
