SPRING EXHIBITION 2016 – NANCY LASAR

Nancy Lasar has established herself as one of the premiere printmakers in the area. In the past few years she has pushed the traditional boundaries of the medium, adding chine colle as well as encaustic.

Her works are elegant and ethereal, and have often been described as “drawing with light” – referring to Lasar’s unique way of  playing with with the opacity of her prints as a backdrop to the energy of line.

The exhibition will include images in monotype with chine colle, mixed-media and graphite drawings and prints on paper, as well as Cliché Verre photographs, and etchings.

What unites these various approaches is the strong sense of swirling and reconfigured form and line. Lines define but do not confine as they oscillate between being and becoming in  transpositional continuum between mark and thing. Lasar’s images attempt to synthesize and condense an essence of alert expectation which implies more than what is suggested and seen. There is a musical intensity of rhythm and movement in the work – of wind waves, rustling grass, murmuring pines and sometimes people. Her lines zip and carve and cradle: like captured calligraphy.

At the gallery talk on May 7, Lasar will focus on the various processes she employs, and will emphasize how they can be combined, overlapped and re-purposed to create new images.

Admission to the talk and reception on May 7 is free and open to the public.

“Whether in drawing, painting, or printmaking, the process for me is about layering and energizing space in such a way that objects are fluid, interconnected and full of energy and movement. I try to utilize a variety of lines, marks and media to suggest both stasis and openness to possibility and transformation as well as the passage of time. As I attempt to describe the multiple realities which intermingle in memory, imagination and daily life, images emerge and diverge – reconfiguring in new relationships.”
