Wappinger woman charged with Aggravated DWI under Leandra’s Law

Wappinger, New York – On February 9, 2016, New York State Police from the Wappinger barracks arrested 40-year-old Stephanie V. Santiago of Wappinger, New York, for Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated under Leandra’s Law, a Class E Felony, and Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the 7th Degree, a Class A Misdemeanor.

Troopers were dispatched by Dutchess County 911 to a one-car auto collision that occurred on Smith Crossing Road.  Following an investigation conducted by the arresting officer, the driver of the vehicle, Santiago, was found to be impaired by drugs at the time of the crash.  Her two-year-old son was a passenger in the vehicle and was not injured.

The defendant was additionally charged with unlawfully possessing a controlled substance.  A New York State Police Drug Recognition Expert evaluated Santiago for impairment.

Santiago was arraigned before the Town of Wappinger Justice Court and remanded to the Dutchess County Jail in lieu of $10,000 cash bail or $20,000 bond.  She is scheduled to reappear in Wappinger Court on February 11, 2016.
