Jail Inmate Charged With Assaulting Two Correction Officers

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith reports the arrest of a county jail inmate on felony charges of assaulting two Correction Officers.

On February 8, 2016, Putnam County Correctional Facility staff contacted the Sheriff’s Department’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) to report an assault upon two Correction Officers by an inmate. The inmate was identified as Carlos H. Lopez, 21, reported to have been homeless in the Village of Brewster at the time of his commitment. The two Correction Officers received injuries from Lopez while the two officers were performing their duties within the Correctional Facility. Lopez is an unsentenced inmate committed by the Village of Brewster Justice Court on a felony charge of Criminal Mischief in the Third Degree. Members of the BCI arrested Lopez and charged him with two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, a felony.

Lopez was arraigned before Town of Carmel Justice Thomas Jacobellis and committed to the PCCF in lieu of $50,000.00 cash bail pending a future court appearance.

If found guilty of the felony charges, the defendant could face up to seven years in a New York State Correctional Facility and a fine of up to $5,000.00 for each charge. He continues to face up to four years in a New York State Correctional Facility and a fine of up to $5,000.00 for the felony charge for which he was originally incarcerated.
