Obituary, John W. Whelan

 

John W. Whelan of Pawling, passed away on November 8, 2015 after a brief illness at the age of 75.  John was born and raised in Ardsley, NY.  He was a master carpenter and worked for the Connecticut Carpenters Union for most of his working life.  He also worked for Marshall Oil in Pound Ridge, NY for ten years before retiring in 2010.   John enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren during his many visits to Connecticut and Pennsylvania. He could fix or build almost anything and had an amazing innate ability to problem solve in these areas. In his spare time he often helped family, friends and neighbors with projects in their homes.  He enjoyed the outdoors and could often be found spending time in the yard at his home.  John was a resident of Pawling for 48 years.  He built his own home there in 1965 and moved in when it was completed in 1967 where he resided until his death.
John was a loving father to his daughter Tracy McCarron, her husband Bob and their three children – Jack, Kyle and Allie – all of Avondale, PA; and his son Todd, his wife Beth and their three children – Ben, Abby and Emily – all of Oxford, PA. Brother of William Whelan, and his wife Marion of Sharon, CT. and Robert Whelan of Millerton, NY.  He was a loving uncle to his 6 nieces and nephews and their families: Kelly, Dennis, Kate, Michael, Meg and Dan.
He is predeceased by his parents, John C. Whelan of Bronx, NY and Vivian McEvers of Tully, NY.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday, January 15, 2016 at 11:00 am for a celebration of life service at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 22 Coulter Ave, Pawling, followed by an Episcopal Mass at 12:00 pm.  In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of John can be made to the Pawling Free Library, 11 Broad St., Pawling, NY 12564.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Horn & Thomes, Inc. Funeral Home, 83 East Main Street, Pawling, NY.
