DCC Opens Resource Center for Student Veterans

November 11, 2015 – Dutchess Community College celebrated the opening of its new Veterans Resource Center on Nov. 10 with a flag retreat ceremony and ribbon cutting.

Elected officials, local leaders and students and staff were in attendance for the opening, which was hosted by the DCC Veterans Club. The flag ceremony, which is a ritual performed at all military installations when the national flag is lowered at the end of the work day, began the program, and was followed by brief remarks and a reception.

The mission of the Dutchess Community College Veterans Resource Center is to provide military veterans and their dependents with the resources, support and advocacy needed to succeed in higher education in a safe and comfortable environment.

“The center reflects this institution’s commitment to those who have served our country, as well as their dependents,” said Dr. Pamela Edington, DCC president. “The vibrancy of our Veterans Club is an indication of the strong connection that our active duty and veteran students have to this campus, and the welcoming environment that our faculty and staff have created for them.”

Carlos Prince, president of the DCC Veterans Club, said, “This new center will be of tremendous assistance as we continuously strive to be one of the nation’s top military friendly schools. We will remain focused on the special and requirements of today’s military veterans, service members, dependents and survivors.”

The center, one of the largest in the region, is in Hudson Hall and includes a study lab with four computers, a printer and seating for 15 students. The lounge features a flat-screen TV, microwave, refrigerator and other amenities. Available services include peer to peer support, mentoring and social networking.

The center will serve the College’s 165 veteran students and dependent children.
