FALL PREVENTION WEEK

This week ushers in the autumn season, and today is the first day of Dutchess County Fall Prevention Week.  According to statistics provided by Dutchess County Medical Examiner’s Office, deaths from falls trail only overdoses in causes of accidental deaths in Dutchess County.  Not surprisingly, the over-60 age group accounts for almost 90 percent of the deaths from accidental falls over the past 5 years.

One way to help prevent falls is to participate in physical activities, especially strength and balance training, like the Dutchess County Senior Exercise Program.  Seniors who exercise regularly have a lower risk of falling; and if they do fall, they tend to have a greater chance of recovery and faster recovery times than a person who does not exercise.      The Office for the Aging is also offering an evidence-based fall prevention program called “A Matter of Balance,” which has had an overwhelming response.  Volunteers who are willing to be trained to co-lead a class are needed.  Call 486-2555 for more information about either program.

Your doctor should also check regularly for osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to become more brittle, and review your medications for any that might cause dizziness or drowsiness, which can lead to falls.  Keeping your home safe with excellent lighting and removing hazards such as throw rugs and clutter can also help prevent falls.  If you have assistive devices like a cane or walker, don’t be too proud to use them.   The Office for the Aging has a limited supply of night lights for those who need one.  They must be picked up from our office during regular business hours while supplies last.

FALL PREVENTION SEMINARS

If you would like to learn more about how you can prevent falls, Dr. Jodi Freidman, a Geriatrician and Medical Director at Northern Dutchess Hospital’s Center for Healthy Aging, will present a program on Fall Prevention at the Office for the Aging’s Rhinebeck Senior Friendship Center on Monday, September 28th at 11:00 AM.  The center is located at the Church of the Good Shepherd, 3 Mulberry Street in Rhinebeck.

In addition, Mary McCarthy, a Trauma Injury Prevention and Outreach Coordinator from Mid Hudson Regional Hospital will present a Fall Prevention program at the Office for the Aging’s Tri-Town Senior Friendship Center on Tuesday, September 29th at 11:00 AM.  The center is located at the American Legion Hall, 1302 Overlook Rd. in Poughkeepsie.

Both talks are free and open to the general public.  Those wishing to stay after either talk for lunch are asked to make a reservation by calling Rhinebeck at 876-8134 or for the Tri-Town talk in Poughkeepsie 486-6363.  There is a suggested donation of $3.00 for lunch for those 60 and over and a $4.00 charge for those under the age of 60

Finally, mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 7th.  Mid Hudson Regional Hospital will be holding a Fall Screening event on that day.  Watch for details on their website.

Health Quest launches fall health initiative: Get Fit Hudson Valley

There is still time to enjoy the great outdoors and what better way to breathe in the crisp fall air and watch the leaves change than with the extra motivation of getting in shape. Health Quest’s Get Fit Hudson Valley challenge kicks off this month on the Walkway Over the Hudson!

The program runs from Sept. 26 to Nov. 7. To participate, people are asked to walk, bike, run, skate or stretch out for at least 30 minutes as many times as possible during the six-week challenge.

Senior Walkers are invited to join the Senior Walking Groups that meet at 9 AM on Tuesday mornings on the Walkway Over the Hudson.

“Autumn is the Hudson Valley’s signature season and a great time to walk, run, or bike,” said Tim Massie, senior vice president of public affairs and government relations at Health Quest. “Whether enjoying the views from the Walkway or Trailway, or going on a hike in the woods or for a stroll through your neighborhood, it’s a great time to commit to get fit. There are some great prizes for this challenge, but we’re all winners when we eat healthy and exercise daily.”

Participants can post an #hqhealthyselfie taken during their activity and post it on Instagram or Twitter for a chance to win some great prizes, including a Nutribullet RX, a Fitbit Flex, gift cards to Dick’s Sporting Goods, subscriptions to NatureBox Healthy Snacks and Get Fit Hudson Valley T-shirts.

Other ways to log your activity include checking in with the Health Quest U app (available free on ITunes or Google Play), submitting online via getfithv.com or mailing in a paper form. There are different prize levels that increase with the number of entries participants submit. In other words, the more you exercise, the fitter you get (don’t forget to post!) and the better chances you have to win.

For more details on entering, prizes and special events, please visit www.getfithv.com
