Obituary, Elisabeth (Elsje) Helena Walters

Elisabeth (Elsje) Helena Walters passed away 09/05/2015, at the young age of 93. Elsje was born on 10/05/1922 in Scheveningen, Holland and was the eldest of two daughters to Adrian van den Bos and Jannetje (Haasnoot). Elsje trained to be a registered nurse completing her schooling in 1946. Before coming to the US, Elsje spent a good deal of time in India. She immigrated to the United States in 1956 and completed her naturalization in April 1964. In the earlier years she lived in Pawling NY and was employed at Harlem Valley Psychiatric Center, Wingdale, NY as a registered nurse and supervisor. She also worked as a ships nurse for the Holland America Cruise lines for many cruises to the Caribbean Islands. It was through her passion of plants and flowers that she met and married the love of her life in July of 1978. Sadly William (Bucky) Walters predeceased her in May 2001, but not before discovering the joys of travel. Together they RV’ed their way all around the US and also made a few trips to Europe. After her retirement from Harlem Valley Elsje and Bucky relocated to Lexington, VA in 1986 where she was involved in the founding of the local food bank. She actively volunteered for numerous church and community programs in the area. Although she never had children, she treated her extended family and friends as if they were her own. Her life was enriched by her devoted friends, Carol and Mike Harris.

She was predeceased by her only sister Nettie Douwes Dekker (2006). She is survived by her niece Nikki Douwes Dekker in NY, stepson William Walters in NY, step-daughter Elaine McGrath in FL along with 4 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren of her extended family throughout the world. She left this world with a piece of our hearts knowing she was loved by all and will be sadly missed.

Arrangements by Harrison Funeral Home & Crematory, Lexington, VA.
