Obituary, Roger Gabriel Gardner

Roger was born March 5, 1930 in Forest, New York, in the family home to Rose Patnode and Albert Gardner. Albert worked for the U.S. Postal Office. Rose was kept very busy with their 12 children: Roger, Gert, Winnifred, Anita, Charles, Jeannie, Genevie, Theresa and Vernon. Three infant brothers died at birth. Both Roger’s parents were deceased in 1988. Roger was the last surviving child.

Roger graduated from Ellenburg, New York High School in 1948. He served in the Armed Forces 1951 to 1953 as a medic.

He married Margaret Mary Rossetti, May 28, 1955, at Lake Pleasant, New York. They were married for 60 years. After marriage, they bought a home in Amenia, New York, where they raised their three children. They lived there for 30 years. Roger worked for the State of New York for 37 years. He started as a steam fireman and worked his way up to the Head Maintenance Supervisor at the Wassaic Developmental Center in Wassaic, New York. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Roger retired March 15, 1985. He retired in Greeneville, Tennessee in 1988. He lived there the rest of his life (27 years). Roger passed on August 29, 2015 in his home with his family by his side.

Roger is survived by his wife, Margaret; three children, Judy Knauss and husband, Dennis, of Yulee, Florida, Lynn Gubler and husband, Harry, of Copake, New York, David Gardner and wife, Mary Kupetz, of Hinesburg, Vermont.; seven grandchildren, Michael Gubler of Copake, New York, Robert Travis of New York, Adam-John Donegan, Long Beach, New York, Jeni Amena Donegan, Essex, Vermont, Alecia Strickland, Steven Strickland, Jonathan Knauss, Matthew Knauss, all of Yulee, Florida; and four great grandchildren.

The family will receive friends 6-8 pm Wednesday at Notre Dame Catholic Church. Rosary will follow visitation at 8 pm. The funeral service will be 11 am Thursday at Notre Dame Catholic Church with Father Dan Whitman officiating. Interment will follow at Graceland Memorial Gardens.

Pallbearers will be family.
