POUGHKEEPSIE, NY:

Arts Mid-Hudson Folk Arts Program and the Mid-Hudson Japanese Community Association present Kimono Kitsuke: The Art of Wearing Kimono, an interactive Japanese cultural program for youth and adults on Saturday, September 12, 2015. The program takes place from 1:30 pm to 3:00 pm at Arts Mid-Hudson (696 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie).  The program is free and open to the public. Guests are welcome to come and go throughout the program.
Join us as members of the area Japanese community demonstrate Kitsuke, the art and technique of wearing a Kimono. During the program, youth and adult guests will try on kimono while learning the proper ways to wrap and tie them. Kimonos are the beautifully elegant, delicately assembled iconic Japanese traditional apparel worn by men and women. Like many other expressions of Japanese culture and arts, there are strict rules governing how to make and how to wear Kimono.
If you have a kimono, feel free to wear it or bring it. If you do not have one (most of us don’t, so don’t despair!), come try on one of the kimono we will have on display. Also on display will be an exquisite Uchikake, a bride’s formal wedding kimono. Get ready to take some pictures.
This program is made possible in part with funding support from Stewart’s Shops.

The Mid-Hudson Japanese Community Association (MHJCA) is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to introduce Japanese culture to the local community, to foster a sense of community among Japanese residents, and to be a bridge for cultural exchanges between Japanese and non-Japanese residents of the Hudson Valley. MHJCA educational presentations and language classes are aimed towards children and adults in the Hudson Valley area. The Association frequently collaborates with Arts Mid-Hudson to present interactive programs celebrating Japanese culture.
The Arts Mid-Hudson Folk Arts Program researches the arts and traditions of the region’s rich cultural, ethnic, religious and occupational communities. Through educational and public programs like this one, the Folk Arts Program shares these traditions. The program is open to ideas and suggestions about how to assist in celebrating your community’s heritage.
